Dr Julia Wilson
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR AND DEPUTY CHAIR OF THE SANGER LEADERSHIP, WELLCOME SANGER INSTITUTEÂ
Julia is the Associate Director of the Wellcome Sanger Institute and represents the Director and the organisation. Her primary focus is on increasing awareness of the Institute’s research within academia, commercial organisations, funders and government(s). Her department oversees organisational Strategy, Reporting and Impact, Research Policy and Research Environment, Translation and Innovation, and Academic Programmes. Julia leads relations with key external strategic partners.
Previously Julia worked at Breakthrough Breast Cancer and the World Cancer Research Fund. As a scientist she was a post-doc at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden and a researcher at Cancer Research UK and Queen Mary University of London.
Julia is an alumni of the Academy of Medical Sciences FLIER programme.
Rachel Hurst
Domino Printing Sciences
Rachel Hurst began her career in manufacturing in 1991 at Domino Printing Sciences which is a global industrial printing company based in Cambridge turning over around ÂŁ650M, employing 3330 employees globally. Our aim is to keep consumers safe and enable manufacturers to deliver supply chain traceability through providing best before/ use by and machine readable variable codes on to food, beverage, pharma, personal care and industrial products.
Her career has encompassed working in a range of roles throughout the business, including manufacturing, supply chain, product management and R&D. Domino has transitioned from a UK-listed FTSE 250 company to now be part of the Brother Industries group and is now part of the growth engine for Brother as they transform their business for the future. In a world of managing certain uncertainty, Rachel's primary role is to develop and manage a sustainable end-to-end global supply chain of the future in the journey to ÂŁ1Bn of sales worldwide.
Rachel is a Fellow of the IET and the Royal Academy of Engineering and has also been a Trustee for the IET.
Caroline Austin
VP OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & HEAD OF TRANSACTIONS, UK, AstraZenecaÂ
Caroline Austin is VP Business Development at AstraZeneca with a global track record of negotiation and execution of transactions across multiple disease areas. Caroline also leads Business Development for Precision Medicine & Genomics to deliver partnerships that reinforce AstraZeneca’s precision medicine strategy. She is passionate about working with partners to access cutting edge technology and capabilities that best achieve mutual goals. With a background in Pharmacology, Caroline originally joined AstraZeneca in R&D, and has since held various business development roles, from leading early to late-stage transactions, as well as on-market licensing and partnering, M&A and divestments.
Among other deals, Caroline worked on the recent acquisitions of Gracell Biotechnologies, a China based (CAR) T-cell therapy company and Fusion Pharmaceuticals, a radiopharmaceutical company, and was involved in AstraZeneca’s collaboration with Merck around its PARP inhibitor, the divestment of various mature brands and the acquisition of Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Diabetes portfolio.
Caroline’s academic qualifications and experience include: PhD in Pharmacology, University College London and post-doctoral research at the Institute of Otorhinolaryngology, University of London and in the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Caroline is a Non- Executive Director on the board of Qureight, a President’s Fellow at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge and an Associate at the Cambridge Judge Business School.
