Professor Dame Carol Black DBE is a renowned expert in the fields of health, work, and well-being. She has a distinguished career marked by her leadership in various influential reviews and initiatives aimed at improving societal health outcomes.

  • Chair of the British Library: In her current role, she provides strategic direction to one of the most prestigious libraries in the world.
  • Independent Reviews: Carol has led several high-profile independent reviews, including the impact of illicit drugs on society, and the effects of drug addiction, alcohol addiction, and obesity on employment prospects.
  • Government Initiatives: She successfully advocated for a cross-government approach and secured substantial funding (ÂŁ780m over three years) to tackle drug misuse.
  • Academic Leadership: From 2012 to 2019, she served as Principal of Newnham College, Cambridge University.
  • Recognition: Professor Dame Carol Black was recently awarded the Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in the New Year’s Honours List 2024.
